SPANISH FORK — A toppled semitrailer hauling apples indirectly caused a second accident that put a motorcyclist into the hospital Saturday afternoon.

The semitrailer was travelling south on I-15 when it took the exit onto SR-6 at mile marker 257. The trailer, which was hauling 60,000 pounds of apples, took the curve too fast and rolled onto its right side, blocking all lanes of traffic, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The driver sustained only minor injuries.

However, traffic on I-15 backed up as a result of the rolled apple truck. A white Subaru travelling roughly 60 miles per hour attempted a lane change, but was going too fast to slow down. The driver hit a motorcyclist in front of her.

The motorcycle then hit a silver Pontiac in front of it, throwing the motorcyclist several feet into the air. He landed on the roadway, losing his helmet in the process, and sustained a broken leg, head injuries and several abrasions, according to UHP.

The driver was transported via medial helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. He is now in serious but stable condition.
