SALT LAKE CITY — A University of Utah student was recovering Monday after being stabbed multiple times in his home by a man police believe to be his father.

Forghan Ghodrati, 60, was arrested Sunday and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of attempted homicide and aggravated assault, University of Utah Police Sgt. Mike Richards said.

Police believe Ghodrati entered the home of his son, Shahram Ghodrati, 28, a university student who lives with his wife near campus, grabbed a knife and stabbed Shahram Ghodrati unprovoked.

Shahram Ghodrati was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery Sunday. As of Monday he was reportedly in stable condition and expected to be released from the hospital some time this week, according to Richards.

The confrontation was reported at 4 p.m. Sunday at 1945 E. Sunnyside Ave., where police said they found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. It is not yet clear what sparked the confrontation, as Forghan Ghodrati has limited English speaking ability, but Richards said family members believe mental illness may have played a role in the incident.
