PAYSON — Interstate 15 was closed in Payson for about an hour Monday after a seven-car accident resulted in multiple injuries.

Seven cars were involved in the accident, which occurred near mile post 248 at about 5:15 p.m. Monday.

Traffic was heavy in the construction zone in the area, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Traffic came to an abrupt stop and a vehicle swerved to avoid a second vehicle. At least two cars were unable to stop, resulting in a domino effect affecting seven cars total.

Six people were transported to the hospital, according to Cpl. Todd Johnson with UHP. He said three of those transported are in critical condition, one is in serious condition and two have minor injuries.

The accident was one of many over the Memorial Day weekend that resulted in critical injuries or death.

The accident was one of many over the Memorial Day weekend that resulted in critical injuries or death. Johnson said UHP has investigated four fatalities on the freeway since Friday, "and that's four too many."

"From our perception — and law enforcement in general, I think would agree — one fatality is one too many," Johnson said. "Of course, last year on this holiday weekend we had zero fatalities. That was our goal and our hope this year."

Johnson said drivers should make sure to use seatbelts and child restraints and to obey traffic laws, and that "hopefully everyone will make it home safely."
