SALT LAKE CITY — Police say they are still sorting through information and waiting for an interpreter who speaks Farsi to determine what caused a 60-year-old father to stab his son multiple times.

The Sunday confrontation was reported at 4 p.m. at 1945 E. Sunnyside Ave., where University of Utah police said they found the victim, 28, suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Police Sgt. Mike Richards said the older man was spotted a short distance away and after a foot pursuit was captured by an officer.

The son was undergoing surgery at a hospital and has since stabilized, Richards said. The father was receiving medical treatment as well for self-inflicted bruises and abrasions Richards said police believe he received after banging is head against the wall.

Details about what may have sparked the confrontation are unclear because of the language barrier, he said. The department was waiting for an interpreter who speaks Farsi. He said the two men are believed to be from Iran.
