NORTH SALT LAKE — A 54-year-old man was killed Monday evening when his vehicle rear-ended another car on I-215, careened across several lanes of traffic and was hit by another vehicle just entering the freeway.
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Ed Michaud said it was around 5:20 p.m. when the driver of a Honda Accord headed east on I-215 rear-ended a Nissan Altima near the Redwood Road exit. Investigators believe the Accord was traveling somewhere between 85 and 90 miles per hour.
The collision caused the man to lose control of the Honda, sending it across the median and into westbound traffic. That's when it was hit by a Jeep that was entering the freeway from Redwood Road, Michaud said.
The driver of the Honda died at the scene, the lieutenant said.
The driver of the Jeep was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, after his vehicle rolled down the embankment, Michaud said.
Monday night, investigators were still trying to determine what caused the initial crash.
The name of the man who died has not been released, pending notification of family.
