SALT LAKE CITY — Another investigation targeting the office of Utah's Attorney General has been confirmed.

A state investigation spearheaded by the Salt Lake and Davis county district attorneys is focusing on possible violations of Utah law, specifically regarding employee ethics.

The case has been active for months, at least partly focusing on possible compensation or gifts that are prohibited. Salt Lake District Attorney Sim Gill was careful to talk about the case broadly, but he did say it is in conjunction with federal investigators, who are also gathering information.

The state investigation is in addition to a federal criminal probe and ethics complaints with the lieutenant governor and Utah State Bar. Gill said this is a separate case, and not a situation of "political piling on."

"We've shared information with the proper federal authorities, in the right context, and we continue to diligently pursue the analysis for the purpose of any criminal wrongdoing, if at all," Gill said.

Gill, a Democrat, is working on the case alongside Davis County District Attorney Troy Rawlings, who is a Republican. Both were careful not to specify any targets or what specific laws they're investigating.

The probe apparently includes allegations that both Mark Shurtleff and John Swallow accepted trips to a luxury resort on the tab of Marc Jenson, who is serving time for fraud. Swallow did not work in the attorney general's office at the time.

The information became public after a prison-bound statement from Jenson.

Gill won't confirm or limit the focus of his investigation.

"I'm not going to talk about the specifics," Gill said. "We have a direction that we are looking at and will continue to pursue that."
