SALT LAKE CITY — Sunday, the nation took time out to celebrate the mothers in their lives and the immense influence each of them has had on their children. For Jennifer Larkin, that meant being named Utah Foster Care's Salt Lake Foster Mom of the Year. So far, she's adopted eight foster children, ranging from 1-year-old all the way to 12.

"Even though we haven't had some of them for very long I feel like they've been with us forever," she said.

Larkin and her husband started looking into adoption when they had fertility issues, but they were told they hadn't been married long enough to qualify. That's when they looked into foster care. "We started out in 2006 and we adopted my daughter Dani, and then her sister came shortly thereafter," Larkin said.

In 2010, they adopted a boy out of foster care. Next week, though, they'll be getting five more, all cousins of their daughters.

She said each child has a different personality, but they all bring something to the family that wasn't there before. "It's interesting how you can take that many strangers and just make it one cohesive unit." 22:50>

Larkin said she was surprised when she learned she was 'to be names Salt Lake foster mom of the year, but her children say it's because she's fun.

"I'm pretty sure we're done, but I've said they before and it hasn't worked out. So we'll see."

Larkin was not the only one to be honored Sunday; her youngest daughter, Jaysie, turned six.
