WEST VALLEY CITY — The West Valley City Police Department returned thousands of dollars meant to investigate drug trafficking.

A report revealed that the department instead spent the money trying to find long-missing Susan Powell.

An audit found that $17,000 of the grant did not meet criteria.

West Valley's deputy police chief said that detectives looked into a possibility that drugs may have played a role in Powell's disappearance.

Program regulators said the Department returned the money for the grant voluntarily.
