WEST JORDAN — Police are praising a gas station employee who likely kept a scary situation from becoming much worse after a traffic accident ignited a gas pump.

Lt. Dean Waters of the West Jordan Police Department said a gray Mazda was eastbound at 7800 South and 4000 West around 5:50 a.m. It appears a white Excursion in the left-hand turn lane turned south in front of the Mazda. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

The impact sent the Mazda across a grass strip and into a Maverik gas station. The car hit a sign, a tree and then the gas pump, which caught on fire.

The car also ignited, but the woman driving jumped out and had only minor injuries. The driver of the Excursion was not injured.

Waters said a quick-thinking Maverik employee hit the emergency shutoff valve for the gas pumps, likely preventing a much bigger fire or explosion.

Fire crews arrived and quickly doused the flames.
