SOUTH SALT LAKE — A sex offender has been sentenced to jail after exposing himself to a 5-year-old girl in South Salt Lake late last year.

Robert Peter Ritt, 73, of Provo, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of lewdness and was sentenced to a year in jail for exposing himself to a girl at the Columbus Center (2450 South 500 East), which houses a public library and a charter school.

Ritt was given credit for the 175 days he has already spent in jail since the Nov. 2 incident. It has not yet been determined whether he will owe restitution payments in the case.

According to police, the young girl ran immediately to her parents, who called police and reported the incident. Surveillance cameras on the building supported the girl's claims. Ritt was captured by police days later when he returned to the building.

Ritt has a history of offenses. He was ordered in 2005 to complete a sexual evaluation after pleading no contest to lewdness. Court documents from Pennsylvania, where he has a similar arrest, show he has more than 30 aliases, three Social Security numbers, has been arrested in eight states and is a registered sex offender in Washington.

He was also charged in Oregon in 2011 with failing to report as a sex offender.
