PROVO — The Humane Society of Utah has increased the reward offered for information in a case of cats being tortured and killed.
The reward now is $5,000, up from the $3,000 announced last week, for information leading to a conviction.
Over the past month, several cats around Provo have been tortured and killed. Investigators first uncovered four cats that had been bound. Some were mutilated and placed on the FrontRunner tracks in northwest Provo.
The cats turned up between Independence Avenue and Geneva Road near the tracks. Police have subsequently uncovered two more cats, for a total of six.
Last week Lt. Matt Siufanua of the Provo Police Department said, "What we worry about is an individual who is willing to do this to animals will eventually, will progressively get worse and maybe even do this to adults or minor children."
Police have said there's no doubt the cats have been deliberately targeted, and whoever is responsible may have been using a trap to snare them. At least one of the cats was somebody's pet.
