SPANISH FORK — A woman is in critical condition Sunday after slamming into the back of a camp trailer that had pulled over onto the shoulder of an I-15 on-ramp.
The husband and wife hauling the trailer had pulled over and parked on the shoulder of the on-ramp at mile marker 254 that connects state Route 164 to I-15, according to Sgt. Jacob Cox with Utah Highway Patrol.
The couple was checking to make sure the trailer was secure. About 3 feet of the left side of the trailer was still hanging out into the travel lane, Cox said.
A woman driving a passenger vehicle then hit the rear of the trailer. The trailer then hit the woman who was checking the trailer and knocked her roughly 15 feet into nearby bushes, Cox said.
The driver of the passenger car was critically injured in the accident, Cox said, sustaining a possible broken pelvis and serious head trauma. The driver was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.
She was also pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extracted by fire officials.
The woman was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Cox said he was unaware of any possible distractions or obstructions that would have caused the woman not to see the trailer. He also said there were no signs of alcohol or drug use contributing to the incident.
The husband was uninjured and the wife was walking around during the investigation, Cox said. She was later transported to a local hospital.
