SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah residents donated just shy of $12 million to presidential candidates last year, according to the latest campaign disclosure reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Records show almost $10 million of that was spent on Republican candidates, with roughly $9.2 million of that going to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Romney, a Mormon and graduate of Brigham Young University who oversaw the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, is a hugely popular figure in Utah, where more than 60 percent of residents are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The campaign finance records show former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who dropped out of the race in January of 2012, gathered $366,673 from Utah.
President Barack Obama collected about $2 million in Utah donations.
