SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man who was run over Wednesday when the truck he was working on slipped into gear has died of his injuries.
Jerome Abele, 54, was looking under the hood of his large service truck at a Union Pacific train yard when the vehicle rolled forward, knocking him down and running over his midsection, South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Gary Keller said. Abele was an employee of a private company and did not work for Union Pacific.
The accident occurred about 1 p.m. in the Union Pacific Railroad's Roper Yard, 2765 S. Orland Place Drive (850 West). Abele was transported to an area hospital in extremely critical condition and succumbed to his injuries about midnight.
The service vehicle, estimated to weigh between 2 ½ and 3 tons, was used to work on semitrailers and usually carries a compressor and welder aboard, Keller said.
Abele's family has set up a *trust fund for his two children, ages 3 and 5, at Mountain America Credit Union, Keller said.
