BRIGHTON — A 26-year-old man is dead after police say he crashed into a tree while snowboarding Wednesday at Brighton Ski Resort.

He has been identified as David Sitek from Sandy.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said it was about 8 p.m. when a skier stumbled upon Sitek. He found the snowboarder wrapped up around a tree he had apparently crashed into.

"The witness tried to converse with the snowboarder there, but he was not responsive. The witness then contacted Ski Patrol for assistance," Hoyal said.

Ski Patrol officers and other emergency responders worked to revive Sitek but were unsuccessful in their efforts to save him, Hoyal said.

Unified police are investigation to determine whether the man was alone when the accident occurred, as well as when it happened.

He was found on the Tantamount run — an intermediate run located run near the top of the resort, which is open for night skiing.
