SALT LAKE CITY — Boy Scouts of America canvassed neighborhoods across the state Saturday collecting donations for the annual Scouting for Food drive.

Many people are generous in their donations to the Utah Food Bank during the holidays, but by March, the charity's shelves are in need of restocking. The Scouting for Food drive is in the single biggest donation day for food donations for the Utah Food Bank.

In just one day, Scouting for Food brings in around 500,000 pounds of food. Last year, troops in District 14 collected just over 16,000 pounds of food from the community.

Every bit helps, Utah Food Bank volunteers say. Scouting for Food and other food drives keep the Utah Food Bank stocked well into the summer months, long after the peak of the holidays.

"It is one of the things where everyone is thinking about hunger at year end and doing good for others. We've had a challenge with fund donations as well as food donations," said Kent Liston, chief financial officer of the Utah Food Bank.

"I'm proud of (the scouts) for being willing to come out and do all this, this is pretty amazing, you see all the different people here helping out," said Troop 985 Scoutmaster Jeff Grant. "It's important to remember that all year long, not just at Christmastime, the Utah Food Bank needs help."

Troop 985 from West Jordan piled bags of food into their scoutmaster's SUV. Two carloads later, all their donations were taken to the designated drop-off location.

The Utah Food Bank had other organizations helping Saturday, including the Utah National Guard.

To say thanks to the many scouts who helped with Scouting for Food, the Utah Food Bank is inviting them for a special tour on March 26 to see how all their hard work will help Utah families in need.
