MURRAY — A loose table on the freeway led to a five-car accident Wednesday that stopped southbound traffic in most lanes for an hour, but no one was injured in the accidents.

At about 11 a.m. Wednesday, the driver of a pickup truck headed southbound on Interstate 15 at about 5300 South lost a table that had been improperly secured in the bed of the truck. The table came to rest in the center of five lanes of traffic.

A red passenger car tried to avoid the table, but struck it. A utility truck braking to avoid the red car was hit by a pickup truck hauling a trailer that was following the utility truck too closely. As a result of the impact, the utility truck slid to the right and overturned.

Among all those, there were no injuries.

At the same time, the driver of an SUV who was following too closely behind a minivan that had slowed for the accidents struck the minivan from behind.

"Among all those, there were no injuries; I think the worst was just a scratch on someone's hand," said Cpl. Todd R. Johnson with the Utah Highway Patrol. "The person responsible for the table circled back, as I understand, and came in and identified themselves as losing the table."

The driver who lost the table was cited for spilling a load on the freeway. Johnson said the accident could have been much worse, if not for all occupants of the vehicles involved being properly restrained.
