SALT LAKE CITY — Late Sunday afternoon, thick snowfall and icy conditions caused delays at the Salt Lake International Airport.

Winds that arrived ahead of the storm brought the first relief from air pollution that smothered mountain valleys in northern Utah for more than a week. The storm was developing into a blizzard Sunday afternoon from Salt Lake City 50 miles north to Brigham City.

Airport officials were alternating runways at the Salt Lake International Airport, while they intermittently plowed the runways.

For flyers, it is recommended that they check their flight's status and bring something to pass the time.

At the airport, one man said he had been waiting for more than two hours to board his flight. Another said his flight had been pushed back five times already.

One woman said her everyone on her plane was staying calm but were a little frustrated.

"They're a little frustrated and amused, but many of us aren't amused at all because we don't know how to get a hold of people who are on the roads and people who are coming and to tell them when to come or not to come at all," said Victoria Pierson.

The National Weather Service says the storm will last through Monday morning, with more snowfall expected Monday night. They expected up to eight inches of snowfall Sunday night in Northern Utah. At Wasatch mountain ski resorts, snowfall was expected to reach one foot.

It's the most significant snowstorm in more than two weeks. Snow began falling in southern Utah late Saturday, leaving six inches of snow at Eagle Point ski in the mountains outside Beaver.
