SPANISH FORK — A man is in custody after gunshots were fired in a Spanish Fork neighborhood last week.

The drivers of two vehicles took their road rage into a residential neighborhood Friday after one of the drivers was following too closely. After performing several brake checks to get the other driver to back away, Bradley Nelson, 41, said he stopped at a stop sign in an attempt to confront the other driver.

"The suspect stopped at a stop sign and told his wife he was going to end this," said Sgt. Courtney Jones of the Spanish Fork Police. "At that time, she didn't know he had his firearm with him."

Nelson exited the vehicle and approached the driver of the second vehicle. When the driver of the second vehicle saw Nelson approach him with a handgun, he panicked and tried to run the Nelson over.

Nelson then fired at the vehicle, striking it twice.

"The suspect fired rounds at him as he drove away from the scene," Sgt. Jones said. "Investigators found there were two rounds that hit the vehicle — one in the driver side rear passenger door and one in the tailgate of the pickup truck."

Investigators said six rounds were fired, but only the two were accounted for. Officers will continue to investigate the scene to determine where the other rounds went.

Neighbors who heard shots were frightened that bullets were being fired around their homes.

"Exercise some patience with each other and understand everybody is trying to get to their destination safely," Sgt. Jones said. "We just need to have some common courtesy while driving."

Nelson remains in jail and was booked on felony aggravated assault. He is expected to have a bail hearing Tuesday morning. The driver of the second vehicle was not arrested, but the Spanish Fork police are considering some charges after prosecutors review the police report.
