SALT LAKE CITY — Three people were injured Monday morning in an industrial accident at the University of Utah.

A steel beam fell off a truck near the 1825 E. South Campus Drive, near the Jon M. Huntsman Center, and hit three people, according to Jasen Asay with the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

"While the construction workers were unloading the steel beam, they somehow lost control and it fell off the truck," Asay said. "The beam hit one construction worker then fell on top of and pinned a second construction worker."

The workers, both in their mid-20s, were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. One man suffered a hip injury, and the other man suffered a leg injury, according to Asay.

"There were three other construction workers that got the steel beam off of the one construction workers who was pinned," Asay said. "That helped out because by the time our crews arrived, the beam was already off him and our crews were able to quickly treat him and transport him to the hospital."

A third man, also in his mid-20s, fell from the back of the truck when the beam fell, but had no serious injuries and was treated at the scene.
