SALT LAKE CITY — The Mayor’s Office of Diversity and Human Rights and the Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission will host a celebration of Human Rights Day on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Leonardo, 209 E. 500 South.
The event marks the 64th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with proceeds going to the Human Rights Education Project.
“While honoring a historic moment in the history of the fight for human rights, this event is a chance to also recognize our community’s ongoing commitment to carrying that work forward,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker.
The event will feature live music, an art auction, refreshments and presentations by Becker, Samira Harnish of Women of the World and Gerald Brown of the Utah Refugee Services Office. The commission also will present its first Human Rights Awards.
The Human Rights Education Project provides training on topics ranging from anti-discrimination laws in housing and employment to the prevention of gangs and sexual violence. The Mayor’s Office of Diversity and Human Rights has held 11 of these trainings, in 15 different languages, since the program launched in May.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the program is expected to run until 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door and can be purchased online at www.slchumanrightscelebration.com.
