ST. GEORGE — What's in a name? For supporters of Dixie State College, the college's upcoming name change has sparked a lively debate about the very question.

Last month, the college launched a website explaining the name change process. Thursday, administrators added a questionnaire in which members of the community can weigh in on name change topic and make suggestions for the future university. School officials say it's an opportunity to re-brand and choose a name that reflects the future of the school, while still honoring its past.

Dixie State College of Utah is a school of humble beginnings, and many names, including St. George Stake Academy, Dixie Academy and Dixie Junior College.

Like the previous mascot change, the a public discussion will surround the name change.

"We've gone through focus groups, one-on-one interviews, as well, we just released a survey where people can fill out, detailed information about the name change," said Erik Sorenson of Sorenson Advertising.

The campus is already buzzing with ideas.

"I think Dixie State University would be fine, or maybe add on to the Universty of Utah Dixie or anything like that," said student Kelsey Jetter.

"Personally I want to see university of St George. I think that's a wonderful name. I think it carries a bit of prestige with it," said another student, Brody Mikesell.

But not everyone is excited about the possibility of losing "Dixie" from the title.

"I think it could cause myself and many alumni a loss of identity and a loss of community," said Donor Jeff Lewis. "I'm not sure you're going to want to donate your time or money to a school you don't associate with."

The school will have to come up with a satisfying compromise.

"At the end of the day, you're not going to please everybody but as long as the institution moves forward over the next 100 years providing the economic needs of the community.

The next public forum to discuss possible names will be held November 29th in St. George.
