Catholic church honors humanitarians, LDS Church Presidency member

SALT LAKE CITY — Catholic Community Services of Salt Lake honored President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his wife Harriet Uctdorf Wednesday night.

The Uchtdorfs were presented CCS's Humanitarians of the Year Award during a celebration at Little America.

"For Harriet and I, it is a very special time because we have gone through a period of time of difficulties in the times when we were young, being refugees and immigrants and living in a war zone," Pres. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the church's First Presidency said. "

Church President Thomas S. Monson and First Counselor, Pres. Henry B. Eyring attended the event as well.

The Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, said, "Different people from different religions, from different walks of life and different backgrounds come together to help us to help others."

Other recipients of the Humanitarians of the Year were Spencer F. and Cleone Eccles, for their support of education, health care, athletics and social causes in Utah.

Florence Holtshouser received the CCS's Unsung Hero Award. She has volunteered feeding needy people through Catholic Community Services for 50 years.
