SALT LAKE CITY — After a six-month renovation project, some Salt Lake City firefighters finally got to move back home. Now, their fire station is one of the best in the city.

The entire building on 270 W. 300 North has been re-done. One important renovation was on the ducting, which prevents exhaust in the truck bays from entering the bedroom where the crews sleep from the fire pole opening.

"I think the firefighters are going to feel better, they're going to be more ready to fight fires or whatever response they need to do," said Director of Facilities Jim Cleland.

There are still some minor things to be done at Salt Lake's Fire Station 2, but the firefighters are more than happy with their newly functioning kitchen.

"The ovens would never light. We're always down there with burning macaroni, we would get a piece of spaghetti on fire to light the pilot light," said Capt. Danny Sorensen.

Sorensen says that was just one of the many things that bugged him about the old place.

Now, there's a new weight room and living room among other things.

"It's like when they flip those houses, and they renovate places, and you see it and you're like 'wow.' it was a wow factor for us," said Capt. Mike Harp.

And when neighborhood children saw that familiar truck back in town, fire crews just had to say hi.

"We've got a little switch there, and we flip the switch and we give them what we call the ‘Toyota horn,' " Sorensen said.

Crews say the only thing that will make this place feel like home is a few dents and dings in the walls.
