SALT LAKE CITY — An adult and small child were hit by a car while attempting to cross State Street Wednesday afternoon.
Salt Lake City police say a woman in her 20s and a little girl, about 5 years old, were hit by a red Chevy Cobalt while crossing at a crosswalk at 1500 South. The impact sent both victims flying.
Witnesses said vehicles on the inside lanes of traffic stopped for two. But the driver of the Cobalt went around those vehicles and over the median into oncoming traffic and hit the woman and child.
The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition; the child, police say, has life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Cobalt was escorted by police and taken to the police station for questioning.
People who live in the area say the intersection is dangerous, and they've seen a lot of close calls prior to Wednesday's accident.
"This kind of thing happens all the time," said Trevor Bagley. "It's just really sad to see someone get ... seriously injured."
He and other area residents say with no lights, the crosswalk can be a danger zone.
"I don't trust the crosswalk as being a safety zone. I just use it because it's legal to use it, and I don't go unless it's clear," said Jeremy Faull. "I don't trust that a car's gonna stop."
Meanwhile, the intersection of 1500 South and State Street has been closed to traffic as police investigate the scene. UTA bus routes are also being diverted around the accident.
