ST. GEORGE — Jeff Dial, communications manager for the Washington County 911 dispatch center, died Tuesday morning after suffering undisclosed medical complications during a 9-hour standoff Monday near Hurricane.
Dial, 56, began experiencing pains during the standoff and was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center, assistant city manager Marc Mortensen told KCSG News in St. George.
Mortensen said Dial was a great man who went to great lengths to establish and improve emergency communications in southern Utah.
"He was Mr. 911. He did a superb job for the city and police department," Mortensen told KCSG News in St. George. "He will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family as they deal with these difficult circumstances."
Dial, 56, was actively involved in facilitating emergency communications during a standoff Monday that resulted in the closure for more than nine hours of both northbound and southbound lanes on I-15.
The standoff ended peacefully after officers negotiated with Jason Alley, 37, who was then taken into custody and booked in the Washington County Jail.
