LOGAN -- The area of Logan Canyon that was site of a crash and dramatic rescue New Year's Eve apparently has had its share of problems.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry said Monday the area surrounding Mile Marker 474 has seen as many as 30 crashes between last winter and this winter.

"It causes some problems in the Logan Canyon area because it's just a really narrow part of the roadway up there," Perry said.

Saturday, Roger Andersen hit the brakes to avoid another crash and went down a 10-foot embankment into the river. Eight people who were close by sprang into action to free three children in the car - two belonging to Andersen and a friend of one of the children.

Andersen's children were released from Primary Children's Medical Center Monday, a hospital spokesperson confirmed.

Perry told KSL that UHP and UDOT were looking at possible solutions in the area, including additional warning signs and perhaps even a cable barrier or fencing to keep cars from falling into the river.

"I think UDOT is really seeing the problem and they're trying to come up with a solution to fix it," Perry said.

Perry said UHP had also brought up the possibility of a cement "k-rail" barrier, but that appears to be a less- likely solution because of flooding in the area - as was seen this past spring. Perry said that kind of barrier could make flooding worse.
