STANSBURY PARK — A bizarre chain-reaction crash Thursday afternoon injured two drivers and shut down state Route 36 near Stansbury Park in Tooele County.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a Subaru Impreza was headed south on SR 36 around 2:30 p.m. when the driver swerved to miss a deer and lost control. Her car hit a road sign near mile marker 60 and knocked its base into the northbound lane of traffic.
A passing Mitsubishi Eclipse ran over the base, sending it flipping into the air. Troopers say the metal object came down through the windshield of a Chevy Silverado and hit the driver in the head and chest. He was later transported to a hospital via medical helicopter with critical injuries.
The Subaru came to rest in the southbound lane and was hit by an oncoming cement truck. The driver of the Subaru was injured in that collision and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
The names of those injured were not released Thursday. Troopers also did not say whether any citations will be issued.
SR 36 was closed for about an hour and ½ while troopers investigated and cleaned up the scene.
