OGDEN -- A family living in a residential area of Ogden could face charges if police can prove the family shot a cow at their home to butcher it for meat.
Ogden police received a call Sunday afternoon to a home on the 2700 block of Gramercy Avenue on a report that a cow had been shot and was being slaughtered.
Officers arrived and found a cow in the driveway in the process of being butchered.
According to Lt. Troy Burnette, neighbors said they heard a pop, believed it was a gunshot, and thought the cow was actually shot at the house.
"The family denied killing the cow at that location," Burnette said. "They say the cow was killed outside the city and brought there to be processed."
Burnette said the law prohibits firing a gun in the city limits. Police are talking with prosecutors and health officials about the case.
"I really would wait until we coordinate with the health department because I'm sure there are standards to slaughtering cows, something a police officer normally wouldn't deal with," Burnette said.
