Official Learns Public Information is Not Cheap
July 4th, 2007 @ 10:56am

PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A Provo school board member is being charged $450 to look at the district's public records.

Sandy Packard says she wants to see how each school spends its money, including student fees and donations.

But district business administrator Kerry Smith says the records are not in an electronic format and would have to be copied at five cents a page, or about $180 for 3,600 pages.

Smith estimates it will take eight hours to copy the documents at a cost of $180. And if Packard wants the records in five business days, she would have to pay $90 for an employee's overtime.

There would be no charge if a majority of the school board supports the request.

Otherwise, Smith says Packard is being charged like anybody else would.
