@Fixie - I sat there reading my book obvious to everything and there was no indication even now as I sit in my office. Something about this makes me feel even less safe on this campus.

@ucam - All you have to do is read the headline. It was at the University Medical Center. That means University of Utah Medical Center.

@Fixie - Yes and no... No, because it is not completely owned by the University from my understanding. Maybe I'm wrong but I know for sure that some offices used by the University in Research Park are simply rented.
However, considering this terrible thing happened in a University operated facility, yes it is campus.
So I said "technically off campus" because it was not on main campus but still in a university operate facility.
But that is all besides the point. It is a terrible thing that occurred this morning and I am saddened by the event. My heart goes out to the family of the officer.

@ucam - It was at the University Health Care Orthopedic Center which is part of the University Health Care system.
@ucam - It is here. We went through it on the shuttle, obvious to the facts. Good thing we can carry if we desire on campus. Eventhough the suspect has been apprehended this is something we all fear.
@Dcnielsen - would have made any difference in this very tragic situation. The criminal wrestled away the gun from a trained police officer. And then he shot him. He was trying to escape, which he did for a few minutes. The two things working for you would hve been A) He didn't know you had a weapon, and B) He wasn't being held by you so there would have been no motive. If he did discover you had a weapon and he wanted to use it, don't you think he'd try and get it away from you? And when he did, he'd no doubt just as soon as shot you as a police officer.

@Dcnielsen - Speak for yourself, not me. I have never even once in my life been afraid of a tattoo headed man shooting his guard and coming after me. Never once.
But I suppose that when Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped you were in fear of kidnappers, but I suppose that fear has abated now.
I don't all of a sudden take on new fears just because one hits the news.

Why tell a story with so little information. I know the desire to be the first to report is strong but telling a informative factual story is more important.
@S B. - They're always getting new information. If they waited until the story was "informative" enough for you, you wouldn't be hearing about it for a fortnight. I'm glad KSL tells me what they know, when they know it... and then keep me updated as they learn more information.

@Hobbes - How do you know what is informative enough for me. I think it just spreads panic to tell part of a story and this helps no one. I just thought it would be good to have a little more information then when they fist posted it. Now it is a respectable story and gives some valuabe information.
@S B. - It is called breaking news SB. They did not have all of the facts available to them when the story was first posted, so they put up what they did have. If they had not put something up at all, people would be commenting on how long it took them to post a story about it.
It has been said many, many times before, but I will say it again. If you do not like how KSL reports a story, go somewhere else for your news.
On a side note, my condolences go out to the family of the officer shot, he is a hero for being willing to put his life on the line to protect others.

@Horace mcgillicutty - I just don't agree with it. I think the only reason they do breaking news is to try to be the first to report a story not to help the public.
I would not be one of those people to comment that the news is slow. Difference of opinion.
I feel like if I don't like something I have the right to try to change the thing I don't like to make things better. I guess if you have anything you don't like you just walk away and don't try to improve the situation.

@S B. - KSL is not going to change their reporting to suit your needs, try as much as you like it is just not going to happen. As I said, it was breaking news and it is not a rush to report it, it is part of the duty of the news media to report significant events to the public. Often times the information they get comes off of scanners, which monitor police radio traffic. Most police agencies do not provide a ton of detail over their scanners so KSL may have to piece things together with very few details.
I would rather have some preliminary details about where something is happening so I can avoid that area than to stumble into a situation that could put my life in danger.

@S B. - I never said I did not like your comment SB, I was simply pointing out to you that it is breaking news and that often times the reporter or news station does not have all of the details surrounding the event, thus they can not write an extremely detailed report. Just as you said, you can have your opinion, I can have mine.
@Horace mcgillicutty - I think I read the story before most people, they updated fairly quickly to have more information and at that time I feel it was enough to publish. The first posting had very very little information. That is what I was commenting to.
@Horace mcgillicutty - I've seen KSL change the report (sometimes) when their info is clearly WRONG and it is derogatory or insensitive to the story. So, it does help to keep pointing out serious errors in reporting. SOMETIMES KSL will fix it.

@S B. - With the possible exception of the psychics who frequent these comment boards (and I only assume they are psychics because they claim to have known something was going to happen after the fact, which begs the question, why didn't they do something about it? . . . But I'm going off topic), there is usually no way to determine in the middle of a crisis when you should be cautious or when it might be an emergency. I would bet that someone at Virginia Tech was also thinking that they shouldn't rush with breaking news and cause unnecessary panic and will be tormented for years that they didn't "jump the gun" in order to get the word out.
It doesn't help to have boohooers who want all the details all the time complaining when they aren't spoonfed exactly what they want when they want it. As soon as something happens that could have been prevented by getting the word out, many of those same boohooers will also be the first to jump all over the media for not releasing details soon enough. There's no winning with people like that.

@Redpengirl - I agree it is hard to know when it is important to get information out. I think maybe I read the story before many of you who commented. I must have got on right when it was first posted and it said something like shooting near University medical center, police car crashed (somewhere else) and that is about it. It didn't give any information that would let anyone know what to do to get out of harms way so not helpful. It not to long after gave significant information and I feel it was valid to print at that time.
And they're talking about releasing criminals because of jail overcrowding? This poor officer. What a tragic way to start the week.

@swoosh - I'd much rather see him arrested, convicted, and wait his time out on death row or sit in his 8x10 (whatever) cell for life without the possibility for parole, and whiddle away his days.

@hortinthewho - I would feel no stress, and we already get screwed on money anyhow. My point is, if he was just shot dead, he's dead, there's no punishment per se. Locked in a cell, nothing to do, no chance of getting out again, and the rest of your life to think about how you got to where you are....sounds fair enough to me considering what was done.

That being said your perception of their life in prison is incorrect. Some prisoners live better in prison than they did out of prison. If your perceptions of prison were correct perhaps it would not be so bad to have them go to prison.

@Getts - Do you know that prisoners at the UDC in draper can buy small televisions for their cell? what about radios? Yes! For a short time they were allowed to buy Sony PSPs but there were too many fights over game ownership so those were removed.
But thats not all. For a guy like this, prison is a status symbol! For most of his life he has told his friends and convinced himself that going to prison is what he wants do with his life.
He gets his meals brought to his cell, clothing 3 times a week, television, telephones, candy, electronics, reading material, college edu, all at the taxpayers "roomservice" expense. His only obligation is that he not die.
I went on a cruise to Mexico once and was not treated that well.

This may have nothing to do with overcrowding. Many times inmates are taken to the hospital for various medical conditions/illnesses. When they are, they are "guarded" around the clock.

@Hobbes - Defending the criminal? Everyone needs a advocate. In this case it is sad that this happened. In the movies you always see the crook get the cops gun, I didn't know it was standard procedure for a corrections officer to have a gun. In this case maybe a change of policy should be in order. I thought it was already policy that guns not be brought around inmates. In many cases they have nothing to lose and stand to gain a lot by getting away. Keeping handcuffs or a restraining device + taser or pepper spray might be a better option in the future.
@UTAH5000 - Correctional Officers in secure (or less-secure) facilities do NOT carry firearms, but transportation officers DO carry firearms for a myriad of reason.

@Hobbes - It was his job to guard the inmate, which he did not do.
@scruz - Were you there? Do you know what happened? You have no way of knowing one way or another what happened. You were not in the situation and were not required to act. Therefore, you have no right to say the Officer (it's not guard)was not doing his job. Until you strap on a bullet proof vest, and run toward what everyone else is running away from, everyday of your life... you can keep your Monday morning quarterbacking comments to yourself.

@Hobbes - I am in no way trying to defend the criminal, but this idea that an officer never does anything wrong just because he is an officer is beyond me. Officers have a tendency to error just like everyone else.

@Hobbes - Once again, Hobbes, you've broken everything down into a neat little "good" vs. "evil" storyline. You've elminated the possible simply because it doesn't fit into the storyline.
It is quite possible that the officer made a mistake in handling the inmate. (NOTE TO HOBBES: This is not to imply that I am siding "with" the inmate and "against" the officer, am simply keeping an open mind concerning the comments made by others.)

@scruz - Re-read my post. YOU DON'T KNOW THE FACTS. How can you clarify "the facts" of a situation that you have no first hand knowledge of?
Don't tell me you respect what officers do for the community when you are questioning the actions of one who was killed in the line of duty. You would probably also be against this officer if he was able to use deadly force in the situation and killed the suspect. Anytime an officer is being disarmed it is a deadly force situation for now blatantly obvious reasons.

@Big B - You certainly can respect what officers do for the community. Just because you question the actions of one who was killed in the line of duty doesnt mean you dont respect what they all do for us. Officers are not 10 feet tall and bullet proof they are human and bleed red blood just like the rest of us. We all make errors in judgement no matter what our title is. If this officer made an error other officers will learn from it and can correct further happenings. Im sure the officer did the best he could at the time unfortunately it tuned out bad. Im not saying her errored im just saying respect shouldnt have to be so fine lined.
@scruz - The only thing I see as done wrong is that he was taken to the orthopedic center. Inmates should only get medical care if it is an emergency not specialist care for something they can take care of themselves if and when they get out. We don't need to pay our tax dollars for this.

@Big B - and Im sorry if I am. Only the officer and the inmate knows what went down from the start but my question is was there only one officer to handle this one prisioner? After all I believe I read he was once one of the most wanted criminals. And was he cuffed and shackled? Im guessing not. But most importantly as difficult as job as officers have and I commend you with all my heart. If it was one on one that in my opinion is putting an officer as risk, good hell they normally call for back up on traffic stops with known criminals so was this officer alone? If so I feel that his superiors, rules/regs whatever put him at risk, go bless his heart and commitment to the job. I just can understand why officers are so underpaid for the garbage they have to deal with. If its any consolation I raised my kids to respect officers. My heart goes out to the family.

Transportation officers go through extensive training and this Officer had over 20 years of experience dealing with the worst people Utah has to offer. So unless you have had esperience with such people and have worked day in and day out with criminals, do us all a favor and keep your mouth shut and your fingers off your keyboard.
@Hobbes - Officer is guarding criminal. Criminal gets officer's gun and shoots officer and an innocent person in an Arby's parking lot. I don't want to be mean-spirited, and I think it's a tragedy that this officer died, but you're blind to reality if you see this as an example of flawless performance by our prison system and the guard who got his gun taken away by the prisoner he was supposed to be guarding.

@Hobbes - I'm glad you are finally starting to understand. People need to stop thinking that criminals will obey the law. This guy was an inmate for a reason. It is the officer’s job to stop the criminal from doing something wrong. If we didn’t expect the inmates to try and break the law, why would we send guards with them in the first place?
@Hobbes - You may HOPE that's not what he's saying, but the truth is the officer very likely made a mistake in handling this prisoner. Perhaps it was as simple as letting their guard down. It could be one of several different scenarios. Police officers on the whole are dedicated, well-trained public servants, so we have no reason to believe that this officer was not well-trained or that they had anything other than being of public service on their agenda for the day. HOWEVER, police officers are not infallible, they are human just like you and me, and therefore are suseptible to taking mis-steps, making mistakes, or momentary carelessness.

@Hobbes - I agree, and I hope you didn't take my comments to suggest that the criminal wasn't responsible for his own actions, or wasn't deserving of blame and condemnation. He is. Murder is a heinous crime, and his sins are on his own head, no one else's. That being "given", my hope is that after a thorough investigation by the law enforcement agencies responsible for transporting prisoners, they will be able to change policies or create better training programs that will make this sort of tragedy less likely in the future.

@scruz - No duh a stapler is different from a gun. The point was this: The stapler is on your desk, therefore it is your responsibility. If someone comes up and takes it from you, whether you're "guarding" them or not, it would be your fault that they killed you with it. Again, after you walk in an officers shoes, don't cry about how they made a mistake! Police/Corrections officers put their lives on the line every day, just like soldiers, so you can live in a "free" society and feel safe. With people like you out there, I'm surprised that we don't have more child molesters, rapists and murderers roaming free. @scruz - What we are all failing to see is this....Stapler or gun the person using it knows what he is going to do with it before anyone else knows!!! The officer did have a duty to secure his gun but having someone know they are taking a gun and using it, sometimes gives them just enough time to do just that!!! I have no doubt the officer followed procedure and put up a noble fight for his life!!! Perhaps we could critique the officers conduct if he were still alive to defend himself. At least wait till the trial to start passing judgement on the officer if you must pass judgement at all. My heart goes out to his family and friends!!!

I was driving down I-15 this morning when the SUV and about 30 police vehicles in pursuit passed on their way down to I-215. There were vehicles from SLC police, Salt Lake County Sheriff, UHP, a blue police car I didn't recognize (one of the cities along I-15 I'm assuming). It is good to see how all the agencies pull together to catch those responsible for tragic events like an officer shooting.
I work here and have personally never felt safe with the guarding of the pts. while I am treating them. Sometimes the guards leave me alone in the room with them.....and read a paper. I am not saying that this is the case with this particular guard....but it was bound to happen.

@hospitallady - These correctional transportation officers are certified by P.O.S.T. as Peace Officers. They have 24 hour law enforcement powers. They are police officers, not guards. Even officers that work in the prison are peace officers while on duty.

This type of training would do little good for Special Functions officers who don't carry firearms, don't initiate traffic stops, and don't respond to traffic accidents (usually).
These are just a few examples of the differences and is not meant to be all inclusive in the distinctions of Cat 1 and Cat 2.

@hospitallady - I work here too....I feel the same way....to casual in the way that prisioners are treated when out. It is the norm for me to insist that the guard stay near!

@hospitallady - I have personaly had to work at the U and guard these inmates. It is hard to do when most of the staff want the inmates un cuffed. I personaly beleave that we should leave all of the inmates cuffed at all times and you as medical staff should lern to deal with it. you want us to compromise our saftey and the saftey of the hospital. I guess we should keep then cuffed up and you lern to deal with it you put us in danger. You should talk to the doc and tell then to quit hagging these scum bags and look at them for who they are. INMATES. so thank you for youre coment about not feeling safe when YOU MADE IT THAT WAY they should all be cuffed to the bed and not let loose for any medical reason wright? Now think about what you just said and see who is to blame for youre not feeling safe.
The man who was killed, was a co-worker of my son in law. He's also a transportation officer for the prison. He said that this man was the type of person anyone could go to just to talk. A "fatherly figure". Just so tragic that his life ended this way. Our thoughts and prayers to the officers family.

@Sean M. - I remember THAT story. Your thoughts are my thoughts too. I can not believe they only had one officer with this guy. Previous stories indicated just how dangerous he was, SOMEONE should have presumed he was STILL that dangerous.
I'd think the family of this killed officer should get some serious explaining on why the prison system thought it was a good idea to only send one officer to do a job that probably should have taken no less than at least 5 officers. It's really sad this officer was killed. It probably did not need to happen if more percautions were taken. And I don't think any reasonable person would think that is a hindsight observation. CLEARLY the prisoner was known to be very violent already... even the public knew that already.

This is just my personal opinion, but i have a feeling that this is just the beginning of a hell storm of things that are going to be happening from now on. Think about it, our officers are underpaid, overworked (due to lack of officers BECAUSE of poor wages) and gang bangers moving in. Utah isnt exactly a safe haven anymore. Our officers are getting younger (not that this particular officer WAS), they're less experienced and have no street smarts. This type of thing is going to occur more and more. People here need to wake up and smell the coffee! (even if the majority of you cant drink it)

These officers put their lives on the line every single day. When they are not on "official duty" they are still "on duty" protecting the community we all live. They do not get paid for this. Nor do they get paid enough for the days they do work. When are we as a society going to WAKE-UP and demand from our elected officials that these officers get paid more money? I find it very interesting that our elected officials are motivated to give money to a soccer stadium; however, correction officers have not received a pay increase in nearly five years!!!!

@Hero\'s-Police&FireOffcrs - The last officer murdered was Fred House. This is a terrible situation. This officer was well trained and it shocks me that he was killed in such a way. I do hope this sends a message up the hill that officers need more funding and more training.

Their still behind in pay compared to the county jails, and capitol hill has said not to expect more than a cost of living increase next year. It is becoming a Sunday night ritual....wondering what tragic events will be in the news Monday morning. My thoughts are with the officer's family.
But maybe this explains the moron that nearly caused a bunch of accidents on I-215 this morning. An unmarked car (grey Pontiac) with only hazard lights and a siren blazing down the left-hand pulloff 'lane' at well over 100 mph kicking up dust, dirt, rocks and other road debris and nearly slamming into the cement wall then veering into the three cars to his right. The dust and debris was so bad I had to brake heavy and avoid hitting the objects being thrown into the middle of the freeway. He didn't allow anyone the chance to move over. However that was at 8:15, after this had all transpired. Maybe he wanted to get on tv or something? There wasn't much traffic ahead of him, would have cost him maybe 5-10 seconds to wait for those ahead to move over. He's lucky he didn't make news of his own.

If people would get out of his way, which you are supposed to do when you see flashing lights and a siren, he might not have to drive down the left hand side of the freeway. Calling a police officer responding to an emergency a moron is really low of you, you never know if the emergency he is responding to is one that involves your family, friends, or someone you care about.
@Horace mcgillicutty - he had no red and blue lights, only hazards on. Second, he nearly caused a handful of accidents by the speed he was moving and the debris he was kicking up onto the roadway. I was narrowly missed by a flying chunk of semi-truck tire and an orange traffic cone. Third, this was on the south interchange between state street and 1300 East on I-215, he was not even close to the pursuit going on by the "39 other cars" as you so eloquently put it. What, were all of those officers not capable of handling the situation so this guy had to put others in danger so he could be the x factor in the chase on I-80? Ridiculous. I have no problem with emergency vehicles or police cars traveling fast and moving traffic out of their way but the speed this guy was moving and the danger he was causing other drivers was maddening. Remember the Nevada Highway Patrol trooper that slammed into the back of the car and killed 4 people? I guess they should have moved out of his way too huh? On second thought, you are now the moron here. What if it was YOUR family member that would have been killed or severly injured by this officer driving recklessly? Well, I didn't want my wife to get that phone call which is why it made me upset.

I would love to see this one transferred to the Super-max facility in Colorado. He is a now a "notoriety offender" (killed a corrections officer) and Utah corrections can send him off to the worst place possible. This guy should have never been sent to a hospital. This criminal is a product of our prisons and without some psychological review should never be let out again, even for a hospital visit. The doctor should have come to him.

I'm with the above, Do the crime and we'll treat your aches and pains, sniffles and colds but if society says you can't be trusted on your own YOU DON'T GET TO GO TO A SPECIALTY DOCTOR!!! Get an extra mattress and take a few Ibuprofen's!!! Were we really going to do anything about his sore back anyway??? Sometimes in out zest to do good, we get lost in the law, as we have seen here, this SOB does not deserve any law to protect him once he killed (no matter the reason in my opinion).

@Jennethann - He was in the local news last fall as one of the most wanted. He was also on a MSNBC special about the Utah State Prison that was filmed a couple years back. Granted he was missing numerous tattoos on the face, was a little hard to recognize :) but they gave his name.

@Darren W. - They have an infirmary at the prison, but they don't have all of the necessary machinary to treat or diagnose every condition. They transport inmates to the U if they don't have the means to do it at the prison.

I try to learn things from tragic news events to I can better myself. From the Virginia Tech shooting I learned that a little kindness without indifference goes a long way and could possibly have prevented that shooting. From the Lori Hacking case I found that lying to your spouse will get you in more trouble and lead to worse things. From this incident this morning this is what I learned:

You can blame whomever you want, but the 2-year-old ingesting poison results in the 2-year-old's death, not the death of the person who failed to secure the poison. My sympathies go out the Officer's family! It is very tragic what has just taken place. I really truly feel for his family and friends he leaves behind. I’m so thankful for the sacrifice he made to be a corrections officer and carry out the punishments our courts set out to rehabilitate offenders. Let us never forget this great man and the sacrifice him and his family has made. My husband works at the "point of the mountain." He has worked there for almost two years now. He will receive his raise this month bringing his pay rate to about $15 per hour. Do you think that is a fair pay rate considering that he puts his life on the line every day? My husband works in one of the gang units and knows this inmate. Transportation officers starting out only make about $17 per hour. They don't do this for the money. They do it to keep our families safe, and they should be given the utmost respect. I pray for this officers' family, and hope that somehow they can find peace in the fact that he gave his life for the safety of others.

They need to increase pay rates in order to retain officers, and reduce officer turnover. Also more funding to hire more officers, and more continuous training. It is a lot to ask, but what price should we put on our safety, and the safety of our officers.

From what I understand this individual has a history of seeking medical treatment (unwarranted) and being difficult. In this paritcular instance, metal is not allowed near the MRI scanner (no shackles), and, given the opportunity, this individual seized the officer's firearm after a scuffle. It is very unfortunate for the officer involved, his family, and the community in which he served.
I give kudos to the officers that apprehended him. They are far bigger men than I. I undoubtedly would have shot this man dead. It is my oppinion that this individual (scum bag) be put to death. I like the aforemention "fertilizer for sod" idea.

@Ed S. - It's too bad there aren't protocols in place that dictate a threat like this person be handled by no less than 5 officers, using one of those collar things they use on dangerous animals (you know it's made of metal, it closes around the neck and has a long metal handle keeping the animal away from the handler?), plus a nice sedative, and then at least 2 of those officers having their guns drawn and trained on the dirtbag, errr I mean "bad guy".

Society needs to attach the same value of life to this monster as he did to his victims. If the PC Label for prisons is "correctional institutions" what do you do with the "un-correctibles"? Prisoners are allowed specialty medical care if their problem is reasonably serious and cannot be addressed by the prison medical staff, including the doctors there. It is not uncommon for prisoners to be transported by armed guards for imaging, surgical procedures, specialty consultations, etc. This is expensive, requiring specially trained guards and transport equipment. Normally, the prisoners are kept shackled unless the visit requires that they be temporarily unshackled.
I'm speculating and have no specific knowledge about this case, but if the criminal had complaints about an arm or shoulder orthopedic problem, it may be necessary to release him from handcuffs to perform an adequate examination.
This system is in place due numerous lawsuits brought over the years by prisoners who believed they were not getting adequate care for problems that developed during their incarceration.
I am deeply saddened by Mr. Anderson's death. I knew him personally. I would like to see his ruthless murderer sit on death row, be executed, and then burn in hell.

Before you rest your case on the Space Shuttle, the O-rings were fine until NASA launched the shuttle in temperatures colder than the manufacture recommended and note that they were against the launch that day. It has been debated over and over again what to do with criminals like Allgiers and it has been decided that they spend the rest of their life in a cell. They essentially are being cared for by the same society that they scoff at. It has been my experience that people like him cannot be rehabilitated and should be put out of our misery.

Deathrow should be a short stay not a life sentence. if we could only take the religious fanatics out of the equasion who feel that these people are "god's children." Someone like Allgiers where there is no doubt should get his speedy trial and escorted on a quick trip the the execution chamber to be put down like the dog he is (sorry don't mean to offend dogs).
So let me get this straight..the prison medical staff thought this scum-bag's back was so hurt, injured or strained that it required an MRI to have an accurate diagnosis. But this same back was strong enough to overpower a corrections officer, take his weapon and kill him! Then, run out of the hospital all the way to foothill drive, hijack a car and then drive across town (all the while being chased by police officers from multiple jurisdictions.) Sounds like he must of had a serious back injury!!!

What a tragedy. Im heart sick. I am thankful that we have police officers out there every day risking their lives so that we can be safe. My prayers are with the officers family. May the suspect get what he so earned...The Needle.

My husband works in the Department of Corrections. To answer some questions out there whether or not we as civilized people think we need "to take care" of the scum of the earth. We do still need to occasionally take these inmates to hospitals for such tests. The Department of Corrections do not have the funding to have specialists and high tech equipment on location.
I am saddened by this tragedy and my heart goes out to this Officers family. They are in our prayers and being a part of the Corrections Department. My husband may or may not have known this Officer, however this is tearing him apart.
I am glad that there was a hero in this situation, the man who tackled the inmate and wrestled the gun away before he was able to kill again.

@Wendi M. - The department of corrections does not have the funds??? They have the funds to take inmates for Dialysis three times a week costing over $8,000 each time they do it, or get a annual contract with the U of U for $2,000,000/year. If they would repriortize their money and place it on getting the "high tech equipment" there at the prision then maybe less of our loved ones would be placed in unsecure facilities with killers!!!

@Anemy - Living in the hinterlands of Utah, we don't have an MRI machine. But, it seems like once or twice a week, an MRI machine is brought in on an 18-wheeler to the local hospital. So, how hard would it be to just take an MRI to the prison, if and when it is needed? Why take any prisoner outside of the gates?
@Emophiliac - It is because there would be such invasive searches of the truck and the equipment bringing it in and then out of the facility. They do not have the manpower to handle such things. The prison is grossly understaffed. It only takes a couple of officers to take inmates out. It would take more to completely search the truck and equipment bringing it in and out.

It is sad that this jerk was able to get medical help at the Universaty Medical Center, but it is even more tragic that he killed an officer. I do say let's move him right into the exicution room and kill him tonight! He killed an officer, and in my OPINION that should move him right into death before he can even go to trial. Okay, there needs to tougher punishments on people who break the law. We've got to get tougher on them, or crime will continue to rise. You see stories of somebody getting arrested for the 3rd, 4th, 5th, DUI and such, HUH? Why is that happening? They shouldn't even have the chance to get a 3rd, 4th, 5th, dui! Something definitely needs to be done. I don't believe criminals in prison should have access to MRI's! Give him an Advil and tell him to get out of his cot and do some stretching. My prayers go out to the officer's family. Its sad to think his family will never see him again. Also, work well done by fellow officers. Each one put their lives on the line to get this criminal. the officer (or whatever he was) was driving excessively fast and recklessly. I would have gladly moved over if I'd have had notice that he was coming behind me but he wasn't even in my lane, he was on the shoulder at more than 100 mph. That, to me, is excessive. I was already traveling 80 mph and and felt as if I were chugging along at 40. Had he not been moving so fast and had I not needed to exit to get to work I would have followed him to get info to file a complaint. The dust this guy was kicking up was causing severe visibility issues for myself and others and he nearly slammed into a cement wall as the shoulder lane suddenly narrowed, forcing him to his right, which forced the car in that lane to make a sudden lane change. Stupid.
He should have been shot in the head a long time ago. Corrections is a WASTE of F'n money. 99% of the people in there would better serve society by being dead.

I think a good punishment would be to build a exercise bike with a generator on it. The punished would ride the bike for 8 hours per day. If the rider refuses to pedal, they do not get to eat. If they generate less than 200 watts, the electrical current will be administered to their own body. At over 200 watts, the power will be metered back into the electrical grid to help pay for their stay in prison, and to pay the victim's family. Anyone have a better, more productive idea?

Putting this person back in jail is a WASTE of law enforcement time and tax payers money. It cost 25 cents for a .40 cal hollow-point bullet... I would gladly supply a bullet and/or the 25 cents needed to purchase said bullet - to take people like this... off the streets, out of jail/prison and off of death row. I had to do a double-take here because I have a son. Take away all the tattoos and this guy looks awful familiar. So it got me thinking...

He had all the advantages. He was a kind, obedient boy who showed immense promise. Until he hit about 14. Then everything seemed to [removed] in a handbasket. And we have no idea why. Thus far he's probably doing nothing worse than living a secular humanist lifestyle with all the self-destructive worldly habits that that entails, but there's nothing to say he couldn't have gone down the same path that this individual did.
The point is, it's easy to say that this "P.O.S." needs to be blown away, and part of me feels the same sort of outrage and craving for justice. Another part of me says that somewhere there's probably a family that has been grieving for the loss of this human for a long time. Part of that family may even bear a share of the burden for the damage that was done to this individual. But I know how I would feel if that were my son who were sitting in that police car with his face looking like that.
I'm not saying he doesn't deserve the ultimate punishment - I'm not stepping into that debate. Our system of justice will decide his fate, and we'll have to live with whatever comes out. But I'm grateful that we live in a country whose system accords even the most aberrant of its citizens the right of a trial with human dignity rather than the vigilanteism that is so easy to find in other parts of the world.

I would ask you all reading this comment to call your Senator, Legislator, Representative and Govenor and ask who is going to accept responsibility for the death of this officer...question why they have made decisions they know nothing about because they have never done the job. Ask why they made the decision to allow only one officer to transport a prisoner, this wasn't his decision it is how it is supposed to be. My back hurts so i need to see a specialist on taxpayers dime when honest hardworking people cant even get health insurance. He probably learned from the other inmates the medical tricks to get your shackles off. This sounds like one of the oldest tricks in the book....and it worked without a hitch. This inmate is a sick human being. He has absolutely no hope of ever being able to function outside of a prison cell. His appearance proves that. This is the third time I have posted and I have yet to see any thing I have written go up on the board. What a wonderful country we live in, the media controls the public opinion with one sided views. HE is wrong, he made a HORRIBLE, violent decision and destroyed Mr. Anderson's life along with his own. I spoke to Curtis this morning and he expressed remorse. NO ONE knows what he has been through in his life or the circumstances surrounding this whole incident. I know personally, that there is alot more to it than the general public is being told. Our prisons are not designed to rehabilitate, they breed hatred and violence. I am NOT making excuses for his behavior, I just know more about how he has been treated and the things that he has lived through, I believe that EVERY person has a breaking point. I believe Curtis reached his. My Prayers go out to every one involved.

@Msnecromance - Be careful what you believe what your friend told you. He was in prison for a reason, and now he's proven he can't be in society period. Poor inmates, they wine and look for sympathy and they are very good at manipulation. Prisons don't breed hatred and violence the inmates themselves do that. I know inmates that have made it because they accept responsibility completely, pay the price and move on. People like Curtis are cowards and are very dishonest. Very unfortunate. Thanks for prayers and pray for Curtis too!

A bunch of 'citizens" taking pot shots at each other....
What i want to know is why do they send one officer, who was 60 years old..(i don't mean anything negative about his age and his ability to do his job) to escort an inmate...that has had violence weapons and escape charges, and who's very appearance is nothing more than a statement of just who he could be, given half a chance. Add to that he is 27 years old and probably spends a good portion of his spare time exercising.
What are they thinking at the prison? whoever sent that officer ought to lose his job..and maybe face some criminal charges....it makes no sense

It Sounds tragic for at least one public servant and their family. Possibly other victim. Prayers go out to all. At least it sounds like they have the suspect in custody.

Filthy inmates receive better medical care than many more deserving people in this country. Maybe after we take care of law-abiding citizens we can look after the filth.
If this was an injured horse, we would likely put it down. I can tell you this: a horse is more valuable than criminals. Maybe after we take care of all the horses, dogs, pigs, cats and other animals, we can take care of dirtbag, loser, filthy, feral criminals.
If this dirtbag can pay for medical care and can find someone dumb enough to treat him, then I say he can have medical care. This makes me sick.

He looks like a walking billboard, so why were they wasting medical care on an individual that obviously doesn't take care of his body when he wasn't in jail.
Why can't they offer medical attention in prison, and if special care is needed, wait until they have served their time. Keep him in his cage!
Why waste medical technology OR money on this guy, or any other convicted criminal!!?? If they get really sick and have to suffer for a while is that a bad thing!???
A lot of "Why's" but this should not happen.

the reason this can't be done at the prison is that each of these machines cost a Minimum of $500K. I for one am not willing to supply every prison with this kind of equipment. I wish we could have a special place for these people to go but we simply can't afford it.
It is too bad he had to take an innocent man from this world only to be caught 10 minutes later. My condolences as well.

Taxpayers, alert your legislators that you do not want to pay for criminal MRIs. Criminals should pay for their own health care. Also, it should be illegal for felons to be treated in a facility where there are law abiding citizens. Prison clinics will have to do for prisoners. If you don't want to go to a prison clinic, keep your [removed][removed] out of jail you filthy [removed][removed].

Usually those the brag the most about their accomplishments, especially in ways that can't be proven, are the least accomplished.
If you really were so accomplished, people would already know, you wouldn't have to tell them.

I've read many times where he tries to insult people by making a jab at them supposedly not having a house, then on this post he admits that he lives in student housing. Pretty lame for a guy in student housing to be making jabs about peoples houses.
His previous post further up said, "For me it was a reminder I was not in the middle of this" speaking about someone Else's humor post. Yikes Dc, you have to come here and read peoples posts to stay in reality and not start thinking that this story had you involved in it?
All narcissists are overcompensating for a perceived lack of strength in other areas, but I would have never guessed that yours was a bluff for a little man so unsure of his place in the world that he comes here to read and make sure the biggest story of the day didn't include him!
