Sam Penrod Reporting A Centerville man suspected of assault is shot and killed by police when he pulls a rifle on officers. The man was shot early this morning inside the bedroom of his home. Police say instead of giving up, he grabbed a rifle out of a closet.

The suspect in this case was wanted for questioning in a simple assault case from last night. But for some reason police say he ran back into the house and grabbed a rifle and pointed it at officers.

Man Suspected of Assault Killed by Police

The 29-year-old man, who police have still not identified, had a party last night involving alcohol, and apparently there was some dispute with another man during a custody exchange of a six-month-old baby.

Police showed up to the house and talked to the suspect's girlfriend about getting him to talk to officers. Officers went inside to talk to the man, but police say the suspect ran into a bedroom and grabbed a gun.

Man Suspected of Assault Killed by Police

One officer fired two shots and killed the suspect. That officer is on leave while the shooting is investigated by independent officers. Police are not saying a lot right now as to what the suspect's state of mind was and why he resisted their efforts to talk to him on what was a relatively minor crime.
