Only 13 percent of Utahns support the taxpayers association's call for a hike in the gas tax. One transportation expert says he has a better idea.

State Senator Ed Mayne says forget raising the gas tax. He proposes dedicating a cent of the sales tax to the roads. "A cent dedicated sales tax would generate $550 million to $600 million annually," Mayne says.

He says Washington should clamp down on those sprinting prices at the pump. Mayne says, "Congress ought to be looking at price controls because we're really dealing with national security."

He says Utah has a backlog of about $17 billion of road work.
