Sam Penrod ReportingSalt Lake police tonight have a mystery on their hands. They have a baby, but don't know where his mother is.

Police learned about the case yesterday from a person caring for the baby, in what seems to be a case of musical babysitters.

Police have the mother's name, but aren't sure where she is or why she hasn't come looking for her baby. The baby boy is okay and in protective custody. But was he abandoned, or has his mother met with foul play? As we explain this situation, you'll see why police really need some help.

Saturday night, a woman known as 'Mandy' drops off her baby boy at the home of a man she plans to spend the evening with. A babysitter watches the baby, as the mother and the man of the house go out, eventually to a Salt Lake bar. But the evening is short lived.

Lt. Dave Askerlund, Salt Lake City Police Dept: "There was an argument between them. It wasn't physical at the time they split up."

But the woman never comes back for the baby. On Sunday, the man takes the infant to a friend because he has to go to work. Several hours later, they call police.

Tonight, through other sources, police learned that the mother is named Mandy Trujillo and is 36 years old.

Lt. Dave Askerlund, Salt Lake City Police Dept: "They didn't know her last name, and they weren't sure on the first name. So we're not sure how well they knew each other."

As for how the man and woman met and why he knows so little about her, police are still investigating.

Lt. Dave Askerlund, Salt Lake City Police Dept: "It does concern us because it definitely is not normal for a mother of a six-month-old baby to not contact somebody."

Police say they have checked hospitals and even the jail, but have no information on the woman. If anyone has information on this case, the Salt Lake police would really appreciate a call.
