SALT LAKE CITY -- A new scam is targeting customers of Rocky Mountain Power. Utility officials say they've been receiving calls from customers saying someone will call asking for a credit card number to pay a bill.

Spokeswoman Margaret Oler says Rocky Mountain Power doesn't conduct business this way.

"Often this caller claims that the customer's check didn't have a signature on it. These are not accepted practices that the company uses," she says.

Oler says the utility had safeguards in place to give the customer assurance that they're dealing with a legitimate company representative. She says if the company calls a customer, it will always have the customer's account number. The caller also will ask the customer to verify their account information during a call.

Rocky Mountain Power urges anyone who receives a suspicious call to get as much information about the caller as possible and then call police. The company says customers can call Rocky Mountain Power directly to validate the security of the information during a call.

The company is working with local law enforcement to put an end to the scam.

Rocky Mountain Power's toll-free number is 1-888-221-7070.
