SALT LAKE CITY -- A boy survived a hit-and-run accident late Monday, likely because he was wearing a helmet. Police are now looking for the driver of the car that hit him.
Police say the 7-year-old and his mother were walking in a crosswalk at 500 East and Herbert Ave. in Salt Lake City toward Liberty Park.
He was walking his bike and wearing a helmet.
A large SUV appeared, struck the boy and knocked him from the crosswalk. The driver took off down 500 East, fleeing the scene.
One witness said the driver was traveling at least 40 to 45 miles an hour.
"I did hear her slam on the brakes," said Chad Morishita. "I did see the car leave the scene and the car still appeared to be going at a fairly high rate of speed."
The boy was in critical condition when he went to the hospital, but regained consciousness and was able to speak to doctors. He is expected to survive.
Salt Lake City police are looking for a black SUV or pickup with a shell and a tan stripe. They say it will likely have front end damage.
