More upsets and Wichita State finally losses
UNDATED (AP) — It was a tough day for Kansas teams in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, but a pretty good one for double-digit seeds. Wichita State and Kansas both went down to defeat on Sunday, while Stanford and Tennessee played themselves into the Sweet 16.
Kentucky has ended Wichita State's bid to become the first team since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers to record an undefeated season in NCAA men's basketball. The Harrison twins combined for 39 points and the eighth-seeded Wildcats erased a nine-point, second-half deficit to beat the No. 1 Shockers 78-76. Andrew Harrison led the way with 20 points, Aaron Harrison finished with 19 and Julius Randle added 13 and 10 rebounds.
Wichita State had a chance to tie or win after Andrew Harrison missed a free throw on Kentucky's final possession. The Shockers called time out with 3.2 seconds left before Fred VanVleet missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Cleanthony Early had a game-high 31 points for Wichita State, which became the first team in NCAA men's basketball history to open a season 35-0 when it won its second-round game.
The win sets up an all-Kentucky matchup in the Midwest Regional at Indianapolis. The Wildcats will take on fourth seed Louisville.
No. 10 Stanford rallied in the second half and knocked off the second-seeded Kansas Jayhawks 60-57. Dwight Powell had 15 points and seven rebounds, for the Cardinal, who are in the Sweet 16 for the first time in six years. Chasson Randle finished with 13 points, six steals and four assists as Stanford advanced to play No. 11 Dayton, a game that will guarantee at least one double-digit seed in the regional finals.
Freshman Andrew Wiggins had just four points on 1-for-6 shooting with four turnovers in his final college game for Kansas.
Eleventh seed Tennessee cruised into the regional semis and will take on No. 2 Michigan at Indianapolis. Josh Richardson poured in 26 points and Jarnell Stokes had an impressive double-double as the Vols hammered No. 14 Mercer 83-63. Stokes finished with 17 points and 18 boards, for Tennessee, which has won its first three games of the tournament by an average of 16 points.
In Sunday's other NCAA men's tournament games:
— No. 3 Iowa State beat North Carolina 85-83 on DeAndre Kane's layup with 1.6 seconds left, putting the Cyclones in the regional semifinals for the first time since 2000. Kane finished with a game-high 24 points and Melvin Ejim (EH'-jihm) added 19 as the Cyclones earned a meeting with Connecticut.
— Jordan Adams scored 19 points and fourth seed UCLA advanced to the Sweet 16 by thumping Stephen F. Austin 77-60. The Bruins ended the Lumberjacks' 29-game winning streak and will face top-ranked Florida when they play their first regional semifinal game in six years.
— Top seed Arizona hammered Gonzaga 84-61 to coast into a regional semifinal meeting with San Diego State. Aaron Gordon and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson each had 18 points for the Wildcats, one more than teammate Nick Johnson.
— Sixth seed Baylor blew out No. 3 Creighton 85-55 as Brady Heslip and Isaiah Austin each scored 17 points to help the Bears earn a Sweet 16 game against Wisconsin. Bluejays forward and NCAA scoring leader Doug McDermott was held to 15 points in his final college game.

Raptors beat the Hawks, Nets keep pace
UNDATED (AP) — The Raptors still lead in the NBA's Atlantic Division by 1 ½ games over Brooklyn following a 96-86 win over the Hawks in Toronto.
Kyle Lowry scored 25 points and DeMar DeRozan added 21 as the Raptors avoided their first three-game losing streak since early December. Jonas Valanciunas had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors.
The Nets picked up their fourth straight win by rallying in the fourth quarter and beating Dallas 107-104 in overtime. Joe Johnson hit the game-tying bucket with 9.9 seconds left in regulation and finished with a team-high 22 points.
Also in the NBA:
— Markieff Morris scored 25 points off the bench to lead Phoenix to its biggest comeback win of the season, 127-120 over Minnesota. Phoenix trailed by 22 in the first half but shot a season-high 57 percent from the floor to overcome Kevin Love's 36 points and 14 rebounds.
— Kenneth Faried had 20 points and Aaron Brooks hit four straight free throws in the final 12 seconds to lead Denver's 105-102 win over Washington. Bradley Beal wound up with 21 points as the Wizards wrapped up a four-game road swing with a 1-3 record.
— New York's eight-game winning streak is over after Jarrett Jack scored a season-high 31 points to lead Cleveland to a 106-100 win against the Knicks. Jack scored 23 in the second half and finished with 10 assists for the Cavaliers, who trailed by 17 in the first half before halting a four-game skid.
— Jordan Hill had game highs of 28 points and 13 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers downed Orlando 103-94. Nick Young added 26 points to the win.
— Milwaukee claimed its seventh straight loss as DeMarcus Cousins and Isaiah Thomas helped Sacramento build a 70-44 halftime lead in a 124-107 rout of the Bucks. Cousins had 32 points and 12 rebounds, while Thomas finished with 30 points and eight assists.
NHL-SCHEDULE
Blues blank Pens
UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Blues have padded their lead in the NHL's Western Conference by ending their two-game skid.
David Backes (BAK'-ehs) scored the lone goal on a deflection and Brian Elliott stopped 33 shots as the Blues blanked the Penguins 1-0 in Pittsburgh. Backes provided just the Blues' second goal in three games, but it was enough offense to support Elliott's fourth shutout of the season.
The outcome puts the West-leading Blues three points ahead of San Jose and keeps the Penguins six points behind the East-leading Boston Bruins.
Also on ice:
— Corey Perry and captain Ryan Getzlaf (GETS'-laf) each had a goal and two assists as Anaheim whipped Florida 6-2 to end a four-game home losing streak. Jonas Hiller's 28 saves helped the Ducks climb within four points of the West-leading Blues.
— Chicago is six points behind St. Louis after Pekka Rinne (PEK'-uh RIHN'-ay) handled 29 shots in Nashville's 2-0 shutout of the Blackhawks at United Center. Mike Fisher and Gabriel Bourque did the scoring as the Predators dealt the Blackhawks their fourth loss in seven games.
— Jon Merrill collected a goal and an assist while New Jersey was building a 3-0 lead in a 3-2 victory over Toronto. The Maple Leafs have dropped five in a row.
— Detroit has moved into a tie with the Leafs for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth by squeezing out a point in a 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota. Matt Moulson won it 2:15 into OT, giving the Wild a six-point cushion between themselves and ninth-place Dallas in the West.
— Evgeni Nabokov (ehv-GEH'-nee nah-BAH'-kahv) had 41 saves in his 58th NHL shutout as the New York Islanders beat Columbus 2-0. Travis Hamonic (HAM'-ah-nik) and Cal Clutterbuck did the scoring in the Islanders' second regulation win ever against the Blue Jackets.
— Vancouver has its first winning streak since mid-January after Zack Kassian set up four goals in a 4-2 victory against Buffalo. Brad Richardson, Shawn Matthias, Yannick Weber, David Booth scored for the Canucks after the Sabres built a 2-0 lead.
MLB-TIGERS
No deal for Scherzer
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have tabled contract negotiations with reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer until after the season.
The Tigers say in a statement that Scherzer rejected their most recent offer. Scherzer struck out 240 batters in 214 1/3 innings last season, and went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA.
MLB-ORIOLES
No Manny for the start for Baltimore
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will start the season on the 15-day disabled. Machado had left knee surgery Oct. 14 and was given the go-ahead to resume all activities on Thursday. Manager Buck Showalter said he expected Machado to play again next month.
NASCAR
Busch takes first
FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — Kyle Busch won at Fontana for the second straight year, holding off Kyle Larson, Tony Stewart and his older brother Kurt on a frantic two-lap sprint to the finish.
Kyle Busch capably blocked Larson and outlasted Stewart and Kurt Busch to become NASCAR's fifth winner in five races already this season.
Jimmie Johnson was comfortably in front when he blew a tire with seven laps left, precipitating the wild finish.
GOLF-ARNOLD PALMER INVITATIONAL
A win for Every
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Matt Every won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, shooting a final round 2-under-70 to finish 13 shots under par, one in front of Keegan Bradley. Adam Scott ended play two shots off the lead to finish third after a 4-over 76.
Hunter Mahan (MAY'-han) had to withdraw from the tournament because of soreness in his lower back. He says his back began to hurt on the practice range before the final round.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Maggert takes first
SAUCIER, Miss. (AP) — A four-under 68 in the final round gave Jeff Maggert the win in the Champions Tour event in Mississippi. He finished play 11-under, two shots in front of Billy Andrade (AN'-drayd) and three in front of Bernhard Langer.
LPGA-JTBC FOUNDERS CUP
Webb stages huge rally to win
PHOENIX (AP) — Karrie Webb closed with a course-record 9-under 63, then waited about 90 minutes before she could celebrate a victory at the JTBC Founders Cup. Webb overcame a six-stroke deficit in the final round and ended up 19-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of third-round leader Lydia Ko and four others.
NFL-MEETINGS
League meetings this week
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — NFL owners could be making plenty of news this week at their spring meetings in Orlando. They will consider 13 playing rules proposals and seven bylaws. They will also discuss expanding the playoff field from 12 to 14 teams, although a vote on such a move is uncertain.
Some changes seem to be sure things: extending the height of the goal posts 5 feet to help determine if kicks are good; eliminating overtime in preseason games; placing fixed TV cameras on the goal lines, end lines and sidelines to help replay reviews.
