(AP) - Over-the-top Carnival, the highlight of the year for many Brazilians, kicked off last week. It was also celebrated in Venezuela, but anti-government activists continued their protests for a second week. Haitians welcomed home their first cardinal, Chibly Langlois. The Caribbean island of Antigua hosted international cricket matches. A women's rights activist chained herself to a gate in Rio de Janeiro to protest physical and psychological violence against women, while a Russian gay couple was showered with rice after marrying in Argentina and then applying for political asylum. Cuba held its annual cigar festival where smokers competed to see who could hold the longest ash on their cigars, and the Vina del Mar International Song Festival, one of the largest musical events in Latin America, came to a close in Chile.
