An attorney for a TV actor accused of killing his wife says a prosecutor is overselling her case and a first-degree murder conviction isn't warranted.
Defense lawyer Jamon Hicks told a Los Angeles jury Friday that Michael Jace acknowledges he killed his wife, but there isn't enough evidence that the actor planned the killing. Jace played a police officer on series "The Shield."
Hicks told jurors that what was going on in Jace's mind is crucial. He called the facts horrible but hoped jurors would listen to the argument that Jace didn't plan the attack.
Jace shot his wife three times in their Los Angeles home two years ago. At least part of the attack was within sight of their young sons.
Hicks says he's not seeking an acquittal but advocating a manslaughter conviction.

A prosecutor is using the words of an actor who played a police officer on TV against him in closing arguments of his murder trial in the death of his wife.
Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Tannaz Mokayef told jurors Friday that Michael Jace's comments to detectives and his brother-in-law that he intended to hurt his wife by shooting her legs were enough to convict him of murder.
Jace is accused of fatally shooting his wife in the back and legs in May 2014. His attorneys say the killing wasn't premeditated and the 53-year-old actor shouldn't be convicted of first-degree murder.
The actor gave a lengthy interview to police and also called his wife's stepbrother explaining his actions.
Mokayef played recordings of both conversations during closing arguments.
Jace didn't testify during the weeklong trial.

Attorneys are scheduled to deliver closing arguments Friday in the murder trial of an actor who played a police officer in the television series "The Shield."
A prosecutor is seeking a first-degree murder conviction against Michael Jace, who fatally shot his wife in their Los Angeles home two years ago. Jace's attorneys say the actor accepts responsibility for killing his wife April, but want the jury to convict him of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
The 53-year-old actor shot his wife three times, including twice in a hallway outside the bedroom shared by their young sons, ages 8 and 5.
The Jaces were married for nine years and had been experiencing financial difficulties. April Jace had told her husband she wanted a divorce.
Deliberations will begin later Friday.
