SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego's mayor says a deal has been reached with Comic-Con organizers to keep the comic book and pop culture convention in town through 2018.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Thursday that Comic-Con will stay in San Diego for at least two additional years.

The city reached the new agreement just days ahead of this year's convention, which kicks off July 8. The 2016 gathering was already scheduled before Thursday's announcement.

The deal was anticipated after hoteliers said last week that they would maintain the same number of discounted hotel rooms during the time of the convention in 2017 and 2018.

Comic-Con International had been negotiating with the San Diego Tourism Authority, which oversees convention center bookings.
