NEW YORK (AP) — The American sculptor Richard Serra (SEHR'-uh) is receiving France's highest honor.
The Insignia of Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor is being bestowed on him Monday afternoon at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York.
It recognizes his close collaboration with French art institutions and ability to integrate his large-scale pieces into that nation's landscape. It also honors him for his contributions to contemporary art.
The award was created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte to reward outstanding contributions to France.
French Ambassador Gerard Araud (zhoo-RAHR' ah-ROH') said in a statement that Serra is among the greatest sculptors today.
Serra is known for his monumental sculptures constructed of steel, lead and rubber.
Numerous works of his appear in Paris and other parts of France.
