NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's Battery Park has gone back to using its historic name: The Battery.
The Battery Conservancy and the New York City Department of Parks announced the change this week. The 25-acre public park on the southern tip of Manhattan sees about 6 million visitors a year.
A decades-long rehabilitation is nearly complete. It includes perennial gardens, a fountain, waterfront promenade, and bike and pedestrian paths.
Many of its historical monuments are being restored. A carousel is slated to open this summer.
As the park comes into its own, the two groups say it's time to reinstate the original name.
The name refers to a battery of cannons that defended the city in Colonial times. It's referenced in early maps and literary works like Herman Melville's "Moby Dick."
