MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University is getting a major federal grant for stroke research.

The Morgantown school says it has been awarded a five-year, $10.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Officials say the funding will help bolster its faculty and scientific research to mitigate the effects of a stroke.

The American Heart Association ranks stroke as the fourth highest killer in the nation and one of the leading causes of long-term disability.

West Virginia University says the burden of stroke in West Virginia is particularly heavy, with the state having one of the highest incidence rates in the country.
