DETROIT (AP) — Four Detroit institutions of higher education are sharing a $21.2 million federal grant to help students from underrepresented groups and low-income families become biomedical researchers.
The National Institutes of Health announced the five-year grant Wednesday. It goes to a consortium of Marygrove College, the University of Detroit Mercy, Wayne County Community College and Wayne State University.
The grant comes from the federal agency's Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity initiative. The goal is getting more minority and economically disadvantaged students into so-called STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math.
The schools say their Rebuild Detroit initiative will spend the first year putting programs in place such as peer mentoring, early introduction to laboratory research and faculty advising. They'll recruit students starting the second year.
