WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota State College of Science college student who was missing for two months before his body was found died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to a final autopsy report released Saturday.
The body of Andrew Sadek, 20, was pulled from in the Red River near Breckenridge, Minnesota, in late June.
The autopsy said it was "undetermined" how the gunshot was inflicted, and the toxicology drug test was negative.
The school said in a statement Saturday that because of the uncertainty surrounding Sadek's death, the case will continue to be handled as an open investigation. A weapon has not been found.
Based on the facts available, the school said campus police don't believe there's a threat to the campus community or public.
Sadek, who's originally from Rogers, Minnesota, was last seen in the early morning of May 1, leaving Nordgaard Hall on campus; the autopsy shows that he died on May 3. Authorities searched by ground and air and dozens of people combed the Red River and other parts of Wahpeton, where the school is located.
Sadek's parents also said they hired a private investigator because the police investigation had gone cold.
After he'd been missing several days, police released an arrest warrant for Sadek on two counts of delivery of a controlled substance, alleging that he had sold marijuana twice to a police informant. Investigators said they had kept the warrant secret because they didn't want to hamper their search.
