Kathy Kay Brewer and her husband have spent a lot of time in Kenya doing humanitarian work. Both are Latter-day Saints and have spent time with the growing LDS population in the African country.
Kathy Kay Brewer recalls an experience that happened 2007 that influenced her testimony of Relief Society and the power of music.
"We were sitting in Relief Society and we were playing the music when a young girl... maybe 19 or 20 years old, came in with her brand new baby," Brewer said. "(She) had been diagnosed with AIDS and had had her baby tested, her new baby, and he was HIV positive."
A church member in Kenya, Carolyne Ashiono, said of that Sunday that was woman was on her way to the train station to kill herself. She believed that there was nothing worth living for, and then she heard the music coming from the Relief Society meeting in the chapel.
"She came in and said that she has never felt, that the feeling she felt in her heart she had never felt and so she stayed," Brewer said.
From that experience, that sister decided to live and to find purpose in her life. She did so in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was baptized in September of 2012 and finds joy in living the gospel.
