VENEZUELA-MORMON MISSIONARIES

Mormon missionaries leaving Venezuela amid unrest

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials with the Mormon church say they're transferring 152 missionaries out of Venezuela because of unrest in the country.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement late Monday saying missionaries who aren't Venezuelan citizens will be moved to other locations in South America.

Officials say Venezuelan missionaries are in frequent communication with their supervisors, and the church is making "every effort" to keep them safe.

Venezuelan government forces and protesters have faced off for the past month in demonstrations that have at times turned deadly.

ILLEGAL OIL DUMP

SYRACUSE, Utah (AP) — Authorities in Davis County are trying to find whoever illegally dumped about 1,000 gallons of used motor oil into sewer lines last month.

Officials with the North Davis Sewer District say operators at a Syracuse water treatment plant noticed a patch of oil flowing into the station the morning of Feb. 21. The plant was not damaged.

Sewer district manager Kevin Cowan tells the Standard-Examiner he suspects the culprit is the driver of an oil pumper who sent the oil into a manhole in the wee hours of the morning.

Cowan says there are no suspects. The person responsible could face fines and citations.

Officials with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality say it's odd for someone to dump oil when it can be readily recycled.

SEX ABUSE-TROUBLED TEENS

Ex-youth worker in St. George pleads to sex abuse

(Information in the following story is from: The Spectrum, http://www.thespectrum.com)

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A 29-year-old man accused of sexually abusing boys at a southern Utah center for troubled teens has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.

The Spectrum reports Diarra Fields pleaded guilty to three counts of forcible sex abuse on Monday. The plea agreement reduces the severity of the felony charges and cancels a trial scheduled for this week.

Police say a 16-year-old boy had reported to his mother that he had engaged in inappropriate touching with and Fields, who worked at the Red Rock Canyon School.

Detectives say the boy reported there were other victims, and a 16-year-old and a 13-year-old later said they had been involved with Fields.

Police say Fields denied the allegations, but apparently lied about a key piece of information used to identify him as the perpetrator.

GAY MARRIAGE-UTAH

UT gay marriage advocate group includes former DA

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former U.S. Attorney for the state of Utah is heading up a new group advocating for gay marriage in the state.

Brett Tolman co-chairs Utah Unites for Marriage, which is scheduled to ask Utah officials to reverse the state's ban on gay marriage in Salt Lake City Tuesday afternoon.

State attorneys in a brief filed last week told a federal appeals court that Utah's same-sex marriage ban should be upheld because such matters should be up to each state.

The Denver-based 10th Circuit Court of Appeals holds a hearing on the case April 10.

After U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby found the ban unconstitutional in December, more than 1,000 gay couples married in Utah. The U.S. Supreme Court then granted Utah an emergency stay in January.

BABY SITTER KILLED

Sentencing for man convicted in babysitter's death

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A Utah man convicted of killing a teenage baby sitter after a night of sex and drugs that also included the man's wife is set to be sentenced Tuesday in Ogden.

A jury last month found the 38-year-old Eric Millerberg guilty of child abuse homicide in the 2011 death of 16-year-old Alexis Rasmussen. He was also found guilty of unlawful sexual contact with a minor, obstruction of justice and desecration of a dead body.

Prosecutors say Millerberg gave the teen a lethal mix of heroin and methamphetamine and then dumped her body in the woods. Rasmussen's body was found 38 days later.

The man's 40-year-old wife, Dea Millerberg, testified against him in the trial. She is awaiting trial on charges of desecration of a dead body.

L'WREN SCOTT-JAGGER

Jagger posts tribute to companion L'Wren Scott

NEW YORK (AP) — Mick Jagger has posted a poignant tribute on Facebook to his late companion, L'Wren Scott, saying he is still struggling to understand her death and will never forget her.

The rocker, who canceled a concert in Australia to fly to New York in the wake of Scott's death, said the couple had spent many wonderful years together and made a great life for themselves.

Calling Scott his "lover and best friend," he paid tribute to her talent as a designer, and what he called her "great presence."

He ended his message by saying: "I will never forget her."

Scott, a noted fashion designer, died on Monday of an apparent suicide.

Scott was adopted by Mormon parents and raised in Roy, Utah.
