PROVO — Utah County residents will soon have access to non-stop flights to Los Angeles out of the Provo Municipal Airport. With the budget flights comes the possibility of cheaper weekend getaways to Los Angeles.

Starting Thursday, Sept. 26, Allegiant Air will offer flights twice a week to Los Angeles International Airport from the Provo airport. Flying Thursdays and Sundays, the non-stop flights offer Utah County residents a close-to-home option for air travel.

Allegiant Air is based out of Enterprise, Nevada and serves mostly rural and smaller cities. The airline currently runs flights out of Provo to Oakland, Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale.

With the maiden voyage of the Provo-LAX flights comes a host of traveling options. Here are some tips on what to see and where to stay on a weekend getaway to L.A. coming in at under $500 per person.

Flights

For a passenger leaving Thursday Sept. 26 on Allegiant’s first flight out of Provo and returning Sunday Sept. 29, round trip airfare from Provo to L.A will cost $202.50, if payment is made with a debit card (not including baggage and other fees).

Places to visit

While Los Angeles is home to the rich and the famous, visitors on a budget also have options when it comes to cost-effective entertainment. Check out the J. Paul Getty Museum. The museum is free, expansive and a must-see for any art or architecture fans. The Getty is located on to the west of downtown Los Angeles and is home to 110 acres of American and European art from the middles ages to the present. The Getty Center is accessible by the Metro Rapid bus service.

Win 4 flight vouchers and a 3-night stay in LA

What: Four roundtrip flight vouchers to LA along with a voucher for a three-night stay at the Clarion Hotel Anaheim Resort.
When: Wednesday, Sept. 25, 5-6:30 p.m.
Where: UVU Hangar B at the Provo Municipal Airport (1185 Mike Jense Circle).
How: Wear your red carpet attire to a screening party hosted by Provo City and Allegiant.

In addition, families can watch a screening of Monster's Inc. at the hangar. Bring pillows and blankets and prepare to get comfy.

Check out Abbot Kinney Boulevard for a taste of L.A. local culture. The district is also accessible via Metro Rapid. In 1990, the street was renamed and the city worked to grow the area as a business and pedestrian friendly dining and entertainment district. Check out the local shops or have lunch on the patio of one of dozens of eclectic restaurants and delis.

No trip to L.A. would be complete without a visit to Hollywood. The suburb is home to the Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theater, Griffith Park and plenty of spots to park out and people-watch. Some of the museums and attractions require an entrance fee, but there’s no charge to walk the streets and take in the sites.

Places to stay

Weekend accommodations in Los Angeles don’t have to break the bank. There are plenty of affordable places to bunk for a quick trip. The Trylon Hotel starts at $75 a night and is clean and perfectly located.

The Hotel Hollywood is located in the heart of its namesake city. It’s definitely a budget hotel, with rooms starting around $100 a night, but is clean and suitable for a few nights on the town.

The Figueroa Hotel in downtown L.A. comes with spades of character. This place is not for those looking for a Four Seasons type of setup, and the amenities are basic. With that said, for rooms starting around $115 a night and an atmosphere that can’t be duplicated, staying steps away from main attractions in this kitschy downtown boutique hotel will serve budget-minded travelers well.

There it is. Plan a weekend, grab a friend, and head out for getaway on the big city.
