HAPPY DAY — Thursday we saw a little taste of pure fan joy, and today we’ll witness true grandpa joy.
Jessica Hickey is the only child of a 20-year widower. She said on Reddit Friday that her dad was so excited at the prospect of grandchildren that he started asking her and her husband for grandchildren on their wedding day.
This was the only preface to the video she posted of her dad’s reaction when she told him he truly was going to be a grandpa. And what a joyous, tender moment to behold. His happy, tear-filled reaction is palpable and will touch even the coldest heart.
Since I’m not a parent (nor a grandparent, surprisingly enough), I decided to take a new tack for Have You Seen This? and get my parents’ reaction to the video.
My parents have nine children, and they’ve been told 26 times that they were going to be grandparents. I explained the premise of the video, they watched it and I asked them to compare it to their experience.
Mom: My mom had a hard time using her words. Instead she made several aww-like sounds and held her hands to her body as if she was getting the announcement herself. She said each time she got the news she was going to be a grandma again it was “surreal” and “like a dream.”
Dad: My dad laughed and said “The tenderness … it’s very much like that fellow reacted.”
