Salt Lake City — An open house begins this weekend at the recently constructed Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mormon Newsroom released photos of the temple Wednesday. The exterior includes granite from China and art-glass windows with designs inspired by the Mayan culture.

The interior includes the same designs, as well as original murals of Honduran landscapes. Furniture and doors feature motifs of the orchid, which is the national flower of Honduras.

The public is invited to visit the temple Saturday, Feb. 9 through Saturday, March 2. A member of the First Presidency of the church will formally dedicate the temple on March 17. It will be the Church's 141st operating temple worldwide.

The new temple is the sixth in Central America. The other five are located in:

  • Guatemala City, Guatemala
  • San José, Costa Rica
  • Panama City, Panama
  • San Salvador, El Salvador
  • Quetzaltenango, Guatemala

The Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple will serve about 233,000 members of the church from Honduras and Nicaragua.

The history of the church in Honduras began in 1952. Today there are about 153,000 church members in 227 congregations in Honduras.
